Eagle's Nest

From the Eagle’s Nest, the „Kehlsteinhaus“ (1.834 m) you can enjoy an overpowering view over the Berchtesgaden region and over to Salzburg.

The 6,5 kms. long road from the Obersalzberg to the Eagle’s Nest was built in 1939 through rock in only 13 months, and is closed for normal traffic.

The journey up is taken by special busses from the bus stop  „Hintereck“ on the Obersalzberg and takes 35 minutes.

At the top there is a tunnel 124 metres inside the mountain to an elaborate, brass lift. It takes 41 seconds to arrive at the 124 metres higher Eagle’s Nest.

The historical Tea House, a document of national socialistic architecture, is run today as a mountain inn.

The Eagles’ Nest, the „Kehlsteinhaus“ was a project of Martin Bormann’s, which he gave, in the name of the NSDAP to Adolf Hitler as his 50. birthday present. Hitler, however, rarely came here. Th bombs of the allies in the Second World War did
not damage the Kehlsteinhaus.

Thanks to the personal commitment of the highest
official of the Berchtesgaden district at that time,
Herr Jacob, the house was not blown up. The
Kehlsteinhaus is therefore, still today in its original form.

Combine your stay on the Obersalzberg with a visit to the museum „Dokumentation Obersalzberg“ which is a permanent exhibition by the Institute of Contemporary History (München - Berlin) on the Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden. The exhibtion shows the history of the Obersalzberg and combines the town history with a portrayal of the central manifestation of the National Socialist Dictator. The exhibtion displays over 900 photos, documents, posters, film and sound records which are , some for the first time, open for the public.
