Salt mines

Experience the historical salt mines - working since 1517: when Berchtesgaden was still a principality, only specially chosen guests could visit the salt mines.

Today this wonderful world of underground minin is visited by around 400.000 visitors yearly who want to know more about production of the white gold now and in the past.

The tours taken by proficient miners, showing information below ground and a new film with maskot "Pauli" will satisfy every thirst for knowledge.

But there is also lots of adventure. In traditional miner's dress, you take the train deep into the mountain. Then down a long slide, through the dark galleries, past a shimmering salt grotto to a mysteriously lit lake. Gliding across the lake on a noiseless float accompanied by a mystic light show and stereo music is one of the highlights of the hour-long visit.
