Mozart and money

Money certainly played an important part in Mozart’s life. As a free-lance artist he did not have a regular income and so he knew both prosperity and great poverty. Numerous begging letters to friends show Mozart’s financial problems.

He lived almost completely as a free-lance and practising artist with no fix income. He had to feed his family and Vienna was an expensive place His position meant that he often had to live from hand to mouth and his income was never guaranteed.
The first time he was in Vienna, Mozart was very popular and knew great prosperity. With this he bought a luxury appartment, his own racing horse
and held glittering parties and balls.

Mozart received his first regular income since he left Salzburg
in 1781 in December 1787 as K.K. chamber music musician.

On the one hand Mozart was often short of money. But on the other hand Mozart and his wife moved in affluent circles, and that in an expensive city. Furthermore Mozart’s income was dependent on his well-being and his creativity.
